Mind Your Language

As you start browsing through the various profiles on any gay networking website, one of the most frequent words you will happen to come across is 'Straight Acting'. Everybody Online is either 'Straight Acting' and/or wants somebody who is 'Straight Acting'. And I can not put it to words how much it infuriates me!

I thought it was only the heterosexual crowd who had the impression of us being sissies. Apparently the gay community is just as up front about this insane propaganda. Sexuality has absolutely nothing to do with masculinity or femininity. Absolutely nothing! Hardly anybody lets their sexuality govern their personality. It just doesn't happen. If you take a good hard look, then you will realize that sexuality comes under personality and not the vice versa. Then why is their so much frigg'in discrimination?

To all those who say they are 'Straight Acting', tell me honestly that have you never worn a clothing item in any shade of pink?. Or that you have never busted a move to Single Ladies or Bad Romance behind the closed bedroom doors? What about trying on some cosmetic product? Where should I begin?! Styling gel? Haven't you ever gone to the barber's for a whitening facial before some important wedding? I know as a matter of fact that no there are waxing parlors for men! Surely not every guy going there is gay! And food! Have you never cooked a single meal in your life? What about shopping? Don't you shop for yourselves? Or have you never gotten teary eyed from Notebook? (Great movie! Those of you who haven't checked it out are missing a great thing!)

Get with it, people!

There is really no such thing as 'Straight Acting'. It's a derogatory term and what's even worse is that we are just as much active in spreading it's use than an average straight crowd. Think about it! Essentially what those the term mean - to acting like a straight person. Do you appear in anyway different from a straight guy? No! Physically there is absolutely nothing that differentiates you from a straight fellow. Then why put so much effort into acting straight?

I will not deny that there are feminine guys out there, because there are. However there is nothing wrong with them and most of all, not all gays are like that. If you happen to like Cricket - you just like it, right? You don't watch it because your straight friend thinks it's the coolest thing ever!

Put a stop this stupidity and simply stop using the word 'Straight Acting'. It would definitely be a step in the right direction to get the equality ball rolling everywhere!

people are just IGNORANT and just plain retarded!!!!!! My cousin is gay and I dare anyone to fuck with him... he is the biggest alpha male I've ever met!

One should understand that there is a difference between gender orientation and sexual orientation. So stereotyping gays as feminine only is outrageously offending and demeaning. It's even more deplorable when a fellow gay guy do this. "straight acting" my foot! it's clearly internalized homophobia. And this stereotyping further make the conventional images for being a bottom or top, even versatile. Stupid divisions, stupid labels.

Retarted? yes! Ignorant? Double yes!

Gays can be alpha males just as much as straight guys can....ppl just don't understand and continue to spout off nonsense!

@ Hadi Hussain

Dude...since when did labels stop being stupid?! :p

I really don't understand how ppl can box others so easily...there is so much diversity...ppl need to understand to appreciate!

@ Sammy Khan

Fingers crossed, buddy...fingers crossed! :)

I SO concur.
I've been hating this trend for so long now.
For some reason the term "straight acting" gets under my skin real bad. Why glorify 'straighties', just say masculine if you're into that.

I hate labels from any aspect of life.

I would interpret the term 'straight acting' as a reference to not being overtly explicit about one's alternate sexual preference. Not being a cross-dresser nor a drag queen. Definitely not in public, especially in societies that tend to discriminate. Personally, it's not very appealing either, to interact with a person who makes it obvious that he is a man trapped in a woman's body.

The world can never get over 'tags/labels'-you don't need them, but cannot live with out them either..bah!

@ H

Exactly! Say "Masculine" if ur into saying "Straight Acting", people make it seem that masculinity is something only confined to straight guys!

@ A Daft Scot Lass

I don't think anybody is a fan of labels!!

@ Faisal Khan

Whether we like it or not, they are as much as a part of the gay circle as masculine gay significantly exclude them by a simply wrong!

@ Whimsical Hatter

I think we can live without u always tell me...why be stereotypical?! ;)

Generally, somebody who says they're "straight acting" is trying to distance themselves from the gay community -- or at least the stereotype most associate with being a gay man (i.e. a prissy pants ladyboy)

However, some are adamant that many gay people simply show no signs of gaydom and are therefore "straight acting" ... a simple way to basically say "I didn't know that dude was gay." I think it indicates the larger issue you speak of here -- that even the gay community presumes other 'mos are distinguishable by their flame.

When somebody says "he's straight acting" my response is always "he was very gay acting in bed last night!" *snaps*

@ Westopher

Oh man...that last line killed me completely!! Hahahah....i'd raise my glass to that any day!

I do agree that guys who say they are straight acting are trying to alienate themselves from the general crowd...but why? If a person really know them, no matter even if they come to kno that their loved one is gay...they won't peg him down as a female!

But Phunkoo , as much as I hate to be judgmental , but crossdressers do bring in a major predicaiment for their families , which I believe is kinda mean n selfish !
I mean aint it kinda just unjustifiable to just let go of all the resistance for temptations ? I m not tryin to demean anyone but that's just what I think bout it !
To each his own
Peace out :)

So after reading the only question I have is... what is a whitening facial?
Otherwise, yeah I think people are people, we all have lots of adjectives that can describe various parts of our personalities, including our individual sexualities.

At some point this world is going to have to learn acceptance and understanding. Its that, or we are doomed to destroy ourselves.

@ S. Khan

If you think of it point on, then anybody who decides to lead his life away from the norm...brings major predicament for their family!

But over here we're not talking about's about how there is no such thing as 'Straight Acting'!

@ Andrea Almanza

Whitening Facial?! Hmm...even I don't exactly know! But every time I go fr a hair cut there is some dude over for a whitening facial!

Anddd...i loved that last line!
